Project highlights

Some cards tell a story with words. Others tell it through imagery.
This design combines vintage photography with a richly layered floral arrangement to celebrate the moments that make us smile. The soft botanical palette, aged script background and classic camera motif evoke the feeling of looking through an old album filled with cherished memories.
The camera isn't simply an embellishment—it becomes part of the narrative, suggesting that beauty is worth noticing, preserving and sharing. Delicate blossoms appear to burst from the lens, symbolising that the best photographs often capture more than an image—they capture emotion.
The muted mauves, blush pinks and sage greens create harmony without competing for attention, allowing the composition to feel elegant and timeless. The film strip tucked beneath the bouquet reinforces the storytelling theme and draws the eye naturally across the design.
It's a project that would suit birthdays, thank you cards, congratulations or simply sending a smile to someone whose memories you treasure.
Technique Tips
One of the strengths of this project is the way the layers build naturally from the background towards the viewer.
A few techniques help achieve this effect:
Work from the back forward. Begin with your vintage background, then place the largest soft florals, then gradually add foliage and smaller blossoms. Finally, add the focal elements such as the camera and film strip.
Vary the height of your layers. Use a combination of flat adhesive and dimensional foam to create subtle changes in height. Even a millimetre or two between layers dramatically increases visual interest.
Allow elements to overlap naturally. Rather than arranging every piece side by side, let flowers tuck behind leaves and allow embellishments to partially overlap. Nature rarely grows in straight lines, and your composition shouldn't either.
Limit your colour palette. Restricting yourself to just a few coordinating colours creates cohesion and allows the focal image—in this case the camera—to stand out.
Ground embellishments. Notice how the film strip and camera overlap the floral arrangement. This anchors the embellishments into the design so they appear to belong rather than simply sitting on top.
Finish with purpose. A simple sentiment placed directly on the camera transforms it from an embellishment into the card's emotional focal point.
Michael's Thought
"Sometimes the most beautiful photographs are the ones we never take. This card imagines a camera so full of memories that flowers bloom from every frame—a reminder that life's sweetest moments deserve to be remembered and shared."
